Egocentric Social Network Structure, Health, and Pro-Social Behaviors in a National Panel Study of Americans (2012)

O'Malley, A. James; Arbesman, Samuel; Steiger, Darby Miller; Fowler, James H.; Christakis, Nicholas A.. PLoS ONE, 7(5), e36250. DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0036250

This paper provides population-representative longitudinal data on how egocentric network structure relates to health and prosocial behaviour in American adults over three waves. It documents the degree-closeness tradeoff and identifies bidirectional links between network size and prosocial behaviour. [draft]

Population: n=3232; Adults recruited from the web-based portion of the Gallup national probability panel.

Keywords: egocentric-networks, social-network-structure, prosocial-behaviour, health-outcomes, tie-strength.

Evidence: moderate, empirical, longitudinal-panel. Risk of bias: medium.
